Senator Bob Menendez has been found guility by a jury on 16 felony counts which include acting as a foreign agent, bribery, extortion, obstruction of justice, and wire fraud. He pleaded not guilty and did not testify.
This stems from an incident that started in late 2022 when Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were the subject of a foreign bribery scandal in which they accepted major gifts from a meat distributor in Edgewater that benefited the Egyptian government. In 2023, Menedez was indicted on federal corruption charges for a second time. After being charged, he relinquished his duties as Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman.
The embattled Senator has been in trouble with the law numerous times in his lengthy political career. In 2015, the Department of Justice indicted Menendez on federal corruption charges of bribery, fraud, and making false statements. He also has been alleged to have had sexual intercourse with underage girls. Despite the indictments, he cruised to re-election in 2018; defeating Bob Hugin, the current New Jersey Republican Party Chairman.
State Senator Jon Bramnick (R-Union County) and 2025 gubernatorial candidate wasted no time calling for Menendez’s resignation. “Given the verdict, the Senator should resign immediately or be expelled from the United States Senate.” He said in a press release. “Corruption has no place in New Jersey and his actions of Senator Menendez have brought shame on our great state.”
Earlier this year, NJ Democrats dumped Menendez for re-election in favor of Congressman Andy Kim (D-Burlington). Kim will be taking on business owner Curtis Bashaw (R-Cape May) in the November election. Menendez has elected to run as an independent for the U.S. Senate, making this race a potential flip for the Republicans. Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in NJ since 1972 when Clifford Case was re-elected in the Nixon landslide.
For the sake of all NJ voters, Bob Menendez should resign immediately.
