Ed Durr to Formally Announce Bid for Governor
The Former South Jersey State Senator Joins an Already Crowded Field for the Governor's Mansion
In February, New Jersey Outlook first broke the news that former NJ Senator, Ed Durr (R-Gloucester) was eyeing a gubernatorial run. That day has come. Durr will announce his run for Governor on Monday per the NJ Globe.
Durr, 60, has long speculated that he was eyeing a run for higher office after losing his re-election bid to former State Assemblyman John Burzichelli. He now pulls the trigger for a gubernatorial bid.
Durr made national headlines in 2021 after unseating Senate President Stephen Sweeney in a massive upset. Before his big win, Durr ran unsuccessfully twice for State Assembly in NJ’s 3rd Legislative District as the “One for All” Party in 2017 and was the Republican Nominee in 2019. Last year, Durr fended off his former legislative partner, Beth Sawyer, in the LD3 Republican primary for Senate.
With Durr officially in the mix, pending his announcement, there will now be seven declared candidates from both major parties for the 2025 Governor‘s race. The Democrat candidates are Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, and former Senate President Steve Sweeney. Outside of Durr, Republican candidates include State Senator Jon Bramick, 2021 Republican Gubernatorial Nominee Jack Ciattarelli, and perennial candidate Robert Canfield.
101.5 Radio Host Bill Spadea is expected to announce his bid for Governor later in the year. Spadea will 100% be in a fight with Durr to win over the conservative vote.
