Recapping the New York 3 Special Election
Former Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi Defeats Republican Challenger Mazi Pilip
The results are in for New York’s special election on February 13th; where Democrat Tom Suozzi defeated Republican Mazi Pilip—marking another humiliating loss for the GOP. Suozzi defeated Pilip by 8 points. After he originally opted to run for New York Governor in 2022, over re-election to Congress, Suozzi is now headed back to Washington.
The special election followed after disgraced representative George Santos was expelled from Congress for misuse of campaign funds. Santos has been under criminal investigation by the federal government, the state of New York, and the local level in Long Island. Santos was elected during the 2022 Midterms defeating Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the general. A few weeks later, it was revealed that Santos lied about his education and employment, which Santos later admitted to. In May 2023, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) introduced an ethics complaint against Santos. It would not be until December 2023 that Santos was formally expelled, becoming the first Republican ever to be expelled by Congress and the first since 2002.
The special election serves as a preview of what Election Day will look like. Based on the results, it is clear voters will not stand for drama and extremism. Voters want someone to go and represent them with honesty and integrity. Usually, candidates that cause drama get voted out at the ballot box. The special election loss was also a big letdown for the Trump faction of the GOP. After winning this seat in 2022, it could be held by the Dems in 2024. If Republicans want to be taken seriously in November, they cannot run any unqualified or fringe candidates for office. For the Democrats, this should serve as a momentum boost heading into November.
