A local New Jersey activist is holding a rally in Bayville aimed at fixing the school funding formula. The rally will take place at Veterans Park (489 Bill Zimmerman Jr. Way, 08721), kicking off at 1:30 PM.
Rhiannon Mindas, also known as Teacher_in_NJ on Instagram, is hosting the rally to promote better funding in New Jersey public schools, with the school funding formula desperately in need of an overhaul. The rally aims to engage concerned parents, educators, students, and other community members in reforming New Jersey’s education system.
The rally will be headlined by numerous GOP state and local elected officials, such as Senator Carmen Amato, Assemblymen Paul Kanitra, Greg Myhre, and Gerry Scharfenberger, and Lacey Township Committeeman Peter Curatolo.
NJO reached out to Rhiannon Mindas regarding the event. “As a teacher and a parent, I have seen the schools around Ocean County make cuts year after year. It has gotten to where there is not much else to take, and now we are reaching elementary class sizes over 30.”
Mindas continued, “My hope is that on May 2nd, they will see how many people are impacted by this current formula, and to let them share their experiences, so those in Trenton have an understanding of how deeply this has hit our communities and push harder for a solution.”
When asked about what the state could do to balance school funding, Mindas said, “The state offers large school tax increases to fill deficits. The continued faults of this formula are not sustainable for many communities. The two possible solutions proposed, that I have seen, are A4860, which helps schools in towns with land restrictions in the pinelands and highlands, and A1189, which funds schools while lowering property taxes.”
