Why You Should Participate in the America's Future Writing Fellows Program
If you want to become a better writer, this is the program for you!
As you can tell by reading this, writing is a passion of mine. Back in high school, writing was a weakness. Now, I have made it a strength. I did not get there overnight. Writing takes time, so having someone look over your work is very important. I will always remember this quote that my critical reading and writing professor told me and the rest of my class when I was in college, “Writing is a process, even the best writers have someone give them critical feedback.” I wanted to refine my skills and learn from those who have been through the same path I am currently on. I recommend the writing fellowship because you network, whether on Zoom or in person, with many like-minded people all over the country in the liberty movement, you learn from many accomplished writers, and hear success stories from people who have worked hard to get where they are now.
America’s Future (AF) is a non-partisan organization that looks to mold the future leaders of the liberty movement. Based in Washington, DC, AF has City Chapters and Regional Hubs all over the country. The Writing Fellows program is AF’s oldest running fellowship. The program is open to all young professionals aged 22-40. AF takes applications every spring and fall.
Going into the program, my weakest link was pitching an article, as was most of the class. However, a lot of it has changed from participating in the program. I have great confidence when pitching articles now to news outlets. Do not be discouraged if the outlet declines to publish your piece, move on to another publication that would be a good fit! Pitching an article is the hardest part of getting your piece published, it is easy to learn if you are willing to pay attention!
I have greatly expanded my network when participating in the program. One of them was teaching a few of my classmates how to operate a Substack page. As someone who currently runs a Substack page, I was more than willing to help them. I would hold weekly seminars after class on many topics, including finding your substack niche, coming up with a creative name for the page, and ways to get your work out there. Not only have my classmates learned from me, but I have learned a great deal from them about the many different industries they are in. You do not necessarily need to be involved with AF or be involved in politics to participate in the fellowship, it is open to everyone interested.
At the beginning of each class, we would hear from other accomplished writers who have been through a lot to get where they are now. One example was Stephanie Slade from Reason Magazine, who was working at a polling firm when she launched her writing career. US News reached out to her boss looking for writers for the upcoming election. However, Slade’s boss did not have the bandwidth to do the writing, so the task was delegated to Stephanie. Stephanie enjoyed the work so much that she worked her way up and is now Reason’s Senior Editor. Hearing Stephanie’s inspiring story has instilled faith in those who also aspire to be published.
The writing fellowship has firmly helped refine my skills in writing. I hope this encourages you to also participate in the program! Writing is a lot like track and field, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. If you want to refine your writing skills, even if you are an accomplished writer, I could not recommend this program enough!
